Maintaining old fans @ alltechbox.com
alltechbox.com have an article up about how to maintain your fans:
CLIP: "The fans that are into our case are very important elements that allow our pc to work correctly avoiding dangerous components overheating, that's why they should always be fully efficient. After some years of work, unfortunately, the fans begin to vibrate and to sound like something into the fan "scratches". In fact the balls (or sleeves) into the bearing got wore and the motor shaft rubs against the metal ring that form the bearing body, slowing the speed of the fan due to friction"

Fortis A92 review over at Otakupc
CLIP: Concepts in thermal design have radically changed over the last year. With ever changing materials, compounds and promises. Most of us are willing to do whatever it takes to shave an extra degree off out peak load or system temperature. To reach this goal, were willing to pay the price. Just to let you know we have an ICEMAT review up:
CLIP: "The surface in review today is the ICEMAT. This is a little different, because it is made entirely out of glass, where as other surface’s are constructed from some kind of plastic. This type of surface has some pros and some cons. The pros are, it is extremely smooth and looks stylish, the cons, it is made of glass, and glass isn’t indestructible, if you drop this, it WILL break! There is also the problem of having to use these “pad surfaces” on your mouse to achieve the smoothness of the glass"

Sorry the news front has been a little sparse recently, the main news poster splank is ill (get well soon), ive been busy with work, also we are working on a site re-design, so stay tuned for that :D
neway, on with some news:
AMD narrows Palomino launch timeframe
AMD's new processor, the Palomino nears closer, as the AMD's on the market drop in price, we know the Palomino is getting closer :D
"AMD confirms Palomino will launch in Fall' shouts a PC World.com headline today, though really it's not much of admission that the chip company has actually made.
AMD's roadmap has long shown Palomino - the latest generation desktop Athlon - shipping in the second half of this year. Narrowing the focus from six months to three isn't that big an issue.
Our ears have heard the date 12 October whispered in relation to the Athlon XP's currently scheduled launch date, three days before AMD techies spill the beans on Hammer at Microprocessor Forum and three days after AMD launches the 1.53GHz Athlon MP chip"
Companies examine cyber-security
"The terrorist attacks of September 11 have companies around the world examining their cyber-security as well as their physical security. And the appearance of the aggressive and fast spreading worm "Nimda," which surfaced Tuesday, one week almost to the minute after the first assault on the World Trade Center, left some wondering if there might be a tie to terrorism"

Altec Lansing AHS30 Headset
HardwareZone have done a nice review of Altec Lansing AHS30 Headset
SOURCE: Hardware Zone
CLIP: If you're a gamer, a pair of headphones will do you a lot of good especially when you have the urge to shoot a few terrorists in the dead of the night. But to ensure you enjoy the best experience in gaming without waking up your neighbors, the only possible way to hear the moaning groans of a terrorist reeling in pain is to use a pair of good headphones. This is where Altec Lansing comes in, with a pair of multimedia headset made for people who enjoys music, but also folks who play games and do serious stuff with it.

CPU's and heat..
Tom's Hardware shows us what happens to a P3, P4, Athlon T.Bird and AthlonXP (AKA AthlonMP) when you remove the heatsink from them while the computer is running!
CLIP: You need to go far back in time to remember a CPU microprocessor that was able to operate completely without a heat sink. Intel's first Pentium CPUs were already producing a considerable amount of heat, but the specifications allowed operation without any special heat removal. A little bit later processors required at least a passive heat sink for trouble free operation. However, for the last three years is has become state of the art that a CPU requires a heat sink as well as a fan that ensures reasonable air flow through the cooling fins

Review of a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV - an 80Gb monstor
SOURCE: Blue Smoke
CLIP: The 7200 RPM IDE hard drive market is certainly competitive, with all manufacturers vying for top sales and performance. Thus, it was with great fanfare that Seagate launched their original Barracuda ATA, replacing the infamous Medalist Pro line and providing rapid storage at a very competitive price. What with the reputation of its SCSI brethren, the Barracuda ATA became a great success. Seagate seemed on top of their game.

Max Payne Review
Must go and get myself a copy - I have heard so many good things about this game!
SOURCE: Viper Lair
CLIP: Four years in development by Remedy, Max Payne was unleashed on the gaming community at the end of July 2001. It was late by a couple of years, but it looks like the wait was well worth it (Just like my review :P). Unlike the popular action games, where the perspective is from the first person point of view, Max Payne takes a 3rd person, "Tomb Raider-ish" perspective. It could be tedious, but Max Payne plays well from this perspective. It also draws you into the game a little more, which is odd, since that's the whole point of "first-person".

CLIP: So I'm thinking, you've been looking over many sites, you've got hold of that lovely new copper cooler (or you may have just settled for your old one) and you're looking to get the most out of it. How can you push the heatsink to its limit without marrying it with a huge fan or ducting? The answer, as I'm sure many of you know is thermal compound, but not just any.

KMV Reviews
Was thinking of getting one of these since I was planning a server - but that seems to be on hold for a while now - grr - stupid parents! A good in-depth report though.
SOURCE: Tech-Report
CLIP: KVM stands for keyboard, video, and mouse—essentially what you control your PC with. The basic premise behind a KVM switch is to allow you to control multiple PCs with the same keyboard, monitor, and mouse combo. Plug all the keyboard, video, and mouse ports on your PCs into the switch, hook up a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and you're ready to go. A switch lets you choose which machine you want to control, and switching between PCs is quickly executed with the touch of a button

So how much memory does XP need?
As the launch of the new windows XP near's, theres always the problem of not having enough memory. Micrsoft say it will run with 64mb but they recommend 128mb. I personally wouldn't run it on anything other than a 256mb + system!!

VIA Files Lawsuits Against Intel Corporation
VIA's new C3 processor announced, then a law sut against INTEL? I think VIA want some processor action :D !!
CLIP: "Intel® processors and the Intel® Pentium™ 4 processor compatible 845 chipset infringe on VIA’s patents; VIA to vigorously protect its Intellectual Property rights
Taipei, Taiwan, 10 September 2001 – VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of core logic chipsets, microprocessors, and multimedia and communications chips, today announced that it has begun filing lawsuits against Intel Corporation in US and Taiwan courts for the infringement of VIA patents by Intel processors and chipsets. Separately, VIA has initiated litigation against Intel for violations of the Republic of China Fair Trade Law and the willful destruction of VIA property by Intel representatives and employees. As part of these complaints, VIA is seeking damages for losses incurred and for injunctive relief.
"Intel processors and the Intel Pentium 4 processor compatible 845 chipset infringe VIA’s patents," commented Richard Brown, Director of Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. "Starting today, VIA will begin filing a series of patent infringement lawsuits and civil actions in the Taiwan and US courts seeking damages and injunctive relief.
"Intel has not obtained a license from VIA for the Pentium 4 microprocessor or the 845 chipset," continued Richard Brown. "The lawsuits will be aimed at stopping the infringement of VIA’s patents by these products," he said.
VIA will file a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against Intel and its Pentium 4 microprocessor.
VIA Technologies, Inc has also filed a complaint to the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission against the illegal anti-competitive behaviour employed by Intel in attempting to prevent the smooth introduction of VIA’s Intel Pentium 4 processor compatible chipsets into the market. In addition, VIA is filing criminal suits over the willful destruction of VIA property by Intel representatives and employees at the Computex 2001 tradeshow held in Taipei in June 2001"
