Title : Merconnets Palmate
Page : 1 of 1 Author : James Date : 13/08/2002 07:40:24

Before we begin, ta to Mer Connet for sending us this.

So, some of you may have a palm top, probably even a psion or laptop. Well, for some it may be a bit of overkill to go and buy such kit. What im gonna look at in this review, is called the Palmate. Its not trying to be a palm top, laptop or psion. To be honest its very similar to the magic I key chain we reviewed here:

Well there ya go, the palmate

Now, your probably thinking, "is that a kids toy!??". Before you make your mind up, here's a low down of what it can do:

  • Touch screen with 2 stylus pens

  • Wireless download from PC

  • Unit to unit transfer

  • Over 100 names, numbers and e-mail addresses

  • Schedule

  • Calculator

  • Time and alarm clock

  • Fortune teller

  • Slot machine

  • Car racing

  • Animation screens
  • Well, if you weren't sure this was a kids toy before, your probably certain now ;)

Here's a few more pics of the palmate:

    OOoooh ahhhhh

    Its tiiiiny

    The back of the unit

    Slimage

Now, to use this device is very easy. You use the stylus that comes with it and simply touch the screen etc to navigate. It also includes 6 buttons where you can do everything with if you somehow loose the 3 stylus pens that come with it.

Like the Magic I, and a few other devices like this, it can recieve data via your monitor. All you need is the software available from the Merconnet site: here. The software is compatible with:

  • Windows 98

  • Windows ME

  • Windows NT

  • Windows XP

  • Windows 2000
  • No installation needed:

    Main menu

You can use the software to enter new phone numbers, schedule your reminders, add screensavers and of course send the information do the palmate. Sending it is very simple:

Press the "link" button on the device, then OK here

    gah!

Its supposed to work in XP, but obviously doesnt. Either that or my computer is fudged. But if you remember, the same thing happened with the Magic I. No use if you cant use the main feature :/

So, is this worth the £22.55? To be frank, no, it isnt. I personally wouldn't buy it, and I dont know if anyone would unless there 6 years old. Save your money and buy a palm top for £120 :D

    Pro's and con's:

    Pro's:

  • Its small
  • Con's:

  • The data recieve feature doesnt work in XP (even though it says it does)

  • Its quite usless if your over 12
