Title : Make a window
Page : 1 of 1 Author : James Date : 27/09/2001 13:20:29

My case has a chimney blowhole, so I needed a window!

The following was provided by coolcasemods.com

The kit I used contained :

  • Clear window
  • Rubber mold

I also needed a means of cutting the hole out for it. I used a jigsaw, as I didn’t have a dremel. You could even use an angle grinder of some sort, and just use a file to tidy the corners - rather destructive method, but it works !

Before you start, you need to make sure that when the window is fitted and the mould is on, that the mould doesn’t obstruct anything in your case, such as a drive bay or fans etc, because the rubber molding is about 1-2 cm think and can cause obstructions in your case. But usually its just fine. Some rubber mould has a way of connecting the ends together, but the CCM ones don’t. This can be a problem but as I state later, its no problem at all.

Right, now we know what's what, TIME TO MOD !

The first thing to do is find a nice working area with enough light and space. You will need a pencil, ruler and the window itself. You can either draw round the window on the outside of your case, or the inside. I drew round it on the outside, which was to prove a mistake ! So I suggest draw round it in the inside to prevent markings while cutting.

The window has been drawn round and the ready to be cut J

When you're cutting your case you MUST wear goggles, the amount of little metal bits that fly off when cutting will cut your eyes up, so WEAR THEM ! Find somewhere with plenty of space. I used a work mate, one of those fold up benches for wood working and so on.

I drilled a hole, so I could fit the jigsaw blade in

While I was cutting, I needed someone to hold the case panel steady, as the jigsaw vibrates a fair old bit ! It will take about 10-20 minutes to cut the panel out with a jigsaw. As I don’t have a dremel I’m not sure on times with it. Below is the finished hole:

Fitting the window is easy, you may need to cut some of the rubber off to make sure it fits nice and snug. The rubber mould that came from ccm, has a small groove and a big groove. The small groove goes around the case and the big groove holds the window itself. To fit the window you may need something like a spoon to squeeze it in. Fitting the window is like fitting a new bike tire you need wedge it in.

That’s the hole cut and window fitted ... woohoo!! I enjoyed myself and it looks good on my case (I ran out of film to take a photo of it actually on my case :D )
